Slow Dance

"Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?

Or listened to the rain
Slapping the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You better slow down
Don’t dance so fast.

Time is short.
The music won’t last.

Do you run through each day
On the fly?

When you ask: How are you?
Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done,
Do you lie in your bed

With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?

You’d better slow down.
Don’t dance so fast.

Time is short.
The music won’t last.

Ever told your child,
We’ll do it tomorrow?

And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die

Cause you never had time
To call and say, “Hi”?

You’d better slow down
Don’t dance so fast.

Time is short.
The music won’t last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.

When you worry and hurry through the day,
It is like an unopened gift thrown away.

Life is not a race.
Do take it slower.

Hear the music
Before the song is over."

- David L. Weatherford

Getting caught up in this hustle around us is so easy, right? The dopamine hits I personally get every time I use a lead pencil to cross off an item on my to-do list is addictive.

We rush from one privilege to the next, from our heated homes to our first-world commitments and then back to who needs us most, sometimes even somehow fitting in a yoga class.

Amidst that chaos, somewhere deep down in our bellies, wisdom whispers to us to slow down, savor the moments, and move more deliberately. This is so beautifully captured in the above poem from Child Physocholgist David L. Weatherford.

In yoga, we move slowly, with intention and grace, making our breath the main focus. All those fancy poses are just a bonus. As long as we continue to breathe mindfully, we continue to do yoga.

The wisdom we practice of slowing down extends far beyond the narrow rectangle of the yoga mat. It's a little different for everyone, but it's still an epic gift if we can make it through life without blinders on most of the time.

Speaking of slowing down, we have another charity event coming up on June 21st at 6 pm, this time to raise funds for Flourish Australia, a mental health center in Penrith.

Sounds by Candlelight is a Gentle Vinyasa, yoga nidra, and Sound Healing Workshop hosted by three of our teachers, Mihaela, Dolce, and Karen, at our Penrith Studio.

The investment is only $37, and all profits go towards Flourish. You can reserve your spot by clicking the button below.

Whatever you can do to continue to move slowly this winter, we at Nin Yoga are cheering you on from the sidelines 🐌
